Local students are trying to save their favourite collectible shop Diversions Gifts in Huddersfield’s town centre from closing.

Over ten students from Kirklees College have been trying to raise awareness about the store located inside the Imperial Arcade by putting up posters and spreading the word through social media.

The gift shop has been running over a year, selling merchandise from Marvel, Star Trek, Star Wars, Doctor Who, the Big Bang Theory and Game of Thrones, as well as customised items.

But since the start of this year, the shop has been struggling financially.

Local shop owner Gareth Hughes, told the Yorkshire Standard: “I’ve tried really hard to give customers something a little different in the town with unusual items, collectibles and work from local artists.

“But our takings have shot down. I really don’t want to close up but it’s starting to look like the only option. Customers and visitors don’t want it closed, they want it to survive.”

Mr Hughes has held special events in-store, including a Star Wars day and a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. He has also raised over £400 for local charities through fundraising events.

One of the students who is helping Mr Hughes is Kamal Mansha, who said: “This a place for us students to go, and it relates to a lot of people, whether they be Whovians or Game of Throne fans. We’d hardly have anywhere to go if it closed, as it’s one of a kind in Huddersfield.

“So we’ve been using different resources to help and the feedback has been relatively great. Even fans who already knew the shop seem to be wanting to go back.”
