Neknomination is “not worth the risk”, Calderdale youth warned

Youngsters across Calderdale have been warned of the dangers of taking part in a drinking game that goes by the name of ‘neknomination’.

Over the past few months, people have been daring each other on social media to film themselves binge drinking alcohol and other substances and then nominating a friend to continue the chain as part of a game.

Branching Out (Lifeline), a Calderdale-based charity which provides confidential drug and alcohol services to young people aged between 10 and 21 years, is keen to encourage people to stop making choices they may end up regretting.

Katy Hetherington, Young Persons Development Manager at Lifeline, said: “As neknominate sweeps social networking it’s crucial that we make sure our young people are safe.

“Binge drinking in this way is incredibly risky. When it is coupled with a “cocktail” of other substances it is impossible to say what the outcome will be.”

In February, a ten-year-old boy studying at a school in Calderdale was reported to have filmed himself drinking a glass with shots of vodka, Nando’s sauce and mayonnaise after being nominated by friends to down some alcohol.

Later, he fell violently ill and was rushed to hospital.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Health Inequalities, Cllr Simon Young said: “I know that it’s easy to feel pressure from friends to take part, but it’s not worth taking the risk.

“If you have been nominated and you don’t want to feel left out you could consider a RAKnomination. It’s a Facebook campaign where people nominate each other to do a Random Act of Kindness within 24 hours.”
