150,000 expected at Huddersfield’s St George’s Square over Tour de France weekend

St Georges Square Huddersfield

Huddersfield’s St George’s Square is set to turn into a centre piece of attraction as Kirklees hosts two Tour de France Spectator Hubs during 5 and 6 July.

St George’s Square, and the Sands Recreation Ground in Holmfirth, will turn into spectator hubs allowing the public to watch the opening stages of the world’s greatest annual sporting event for free.

During the Tour de France weekend, St George’s Hall will host the town’s Big Screen, showing live coverage of all the weekend’s sporting action, as well as short films, before turning into an outdoor cinema each evening.

With music and street performers, as well as a mix of food and drink, the location is expected to draw the crowds keen to make the most of the event.

Cllr David Sheard, Leader of Kirklees Council, said: “We’re delighted to have secured not just one, but two official spectator Hubs in Kirklees.

“We’re hosting what we expect will be one of the busiest stretches of the entire route and we’ve been told to expect in excess of 150,000 visitors that weekend.”

Stalls will be sited at St George’s Square, and Kirklees Council is advising local businesses who want to take part in the Hub’s Food and Drink Markets to act quickly to secure their place.

Cllr Sheard added: “With all those people needing to be fed and watered, we’re determined to make sure Kirklees businesses make the most of that opportunity.”

Businesses can email for an application form. The closing date for applications is 5 April.
