Leeds-born Matthew Lewis, famous for playing Neville Longbottom in Harry Potter, has taken the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

The 25-year-old actor posted a video of himself getting a bucket of iced water poured over him as he stood inside a large garbage bin.

He said: “I’m Matthew Lewis, I’ve been putting this off for some time but I can’t ignore it for long enough – it’s for a good cause.”

He nominated some of his family to take part in the challenge and also nominated Tom Felton, who plays Draco Malfoy from the Harry Potter films.

It was part of a viral challenge in which people dump a bucket of cold water on their heads to raise awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

It’s an American name for the condition usually referred to as motor neurone disease (MND) in the UK, where the leading organisation is the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MDNA).

ALS affects the brain and the spinal cord, in which motor neurons degenerate and die which makes it increasingly difficult to move muscles.

There is currently no cure.
