A Springwood-based community radio station has raised £32,590 for medical equipment and relief in Pakistan.

The money raised by Radio Paigham will provide relief in the towns of Hazro and Attock going towards the installation of four dialysis machines and an ambulance service in the Punjab province.

Donated to Muslim Global Relief, the large cheque reads £32,590 but donations continue to pour in by listeners and members of the public.

Station manager Nisar Smiler told the Yorkshire Standard: “The goal for this year was to help people with kidney problems as well as providing an ambulance service. So we feel delighted to have helped those in need.”

Senior member at the radio and member of the Muslim Welfare Association of Huddersfield, Fazal Ur-Rehman Khan, added: “The people of Huddersfield are very kind and we feel delighted to have helped. We continue to fundraise and every penny of this goes towards charity.”

Radio Paigham has been active in raising money for charity and projects since 2005, when it collected for the Pakistan earthquake and helped build 25 houses for the homeless.

In 2010, over £50,000 was raised for refugee centres and in 2011, money went towards the building of an Islamic place of worship in Balakot, Pakistan.

In 2012, 21 water pumps were installed in the Punjab province of Pakistan and four dialysis machines were also given for hospitals to use.

Last year saw the biggest sum raised with around £60,000, which went towards dialysis machines and water pumps in Faisalabad.
