Leeds residents have joined in ridiculing Fox News after an American terrorism commentator described Birmingham as a “Muslim-only city”.

Steven Emerson told the channel that the city is “totally Muslim and non-Muslims simply don’t go in”.

He also said that in London “Muslim religious police” beat “anyone who doesn’t dress according to Muslim, religious Muslim attire”.

Leeds residents took to Twitter to ridicule the comments with the hashtag #FoxNewsFacts, which became trending in the Leeds region.

The hashtag has also been trending in the UK.

Mr Emerson, who founded a group called The Investigative Project on Terrorism and is a regular Fox contributor, was giving his perspective on the Paris terror attacks to Fox presenter Jeanine Pirro.

He issued an apology for his “terrible error” and admitted his comments were “totally inaccurate”.

Cllr James McKay, Birmingham’s cabinet member for social cohesion, equalities and community safety, said: “These curious comments clearly have no foundation, and it’s good to see an apology has been issued.

“Birmingham’s an incredible place, rightly held up as an example of how communities can and do live and thrive together. We are amazingly diverse, and that’s one of the things that makes us brilliant.”
