According to local residents, fire officers had to cut a car roof open to rescue a passenger who was taken to hospital in an ambulance.

One local resident who lives on South Street, who also requested not to be named, said: “Whilst officers were trying to talk to the passenger who was stuck in the car he didn’t seem to respond initially.

“But then paramedics were called and it was possibly over 30 to 40 minutes it took them to arrive.”

West Yorkshire Police confirmed that a red Toyota Yaris failed to stop when requested by officers.

A spokesperson said: “There was a short pursuit which ended with a collision between the car and a police vehicle.

“The four occupants of the vehicle and two officers were treated for minor injuries and a man was arrested for dangerous driving.”

From 7am on New Year’s Eve, 31 December, to 7am on New Year’s Day, 1 January, West Yorkshire Police received over 3,500 emergency and non-emergency calls.
