Respect party leader accuses UKIP defector of ‘lying’ about political past

Respect party leader George Galloway MP has accused Amjad Bashir for lying about his alleged political past in the Respect party after he defected from UKIP to the Conservatives.

Mr Galloway hit out at Mr Bashir, an MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber, who had been expected to confirm his defection to the Tories before UKIP decided to announce his suspension beforehand.

His former party said it had suspended him over financial and employment concerns, and because of a “continued affiliation” with Mujeeb Bhutto, who was involved in a kidnapping gang.

Mr Bashir rejected the claims as “absurd and made-up”.

“Prepared to confirm”

But MP for Bradford West, George Galloway, claims Mr Bashir “is lying” about his political past and affiliation with the Respect party.

He said: “His denial that he joined Respect, was selected as a candidate and then de-selected, is a shameful and damning untruth.

“If the Tories are prepared to embrace this man then I think it says even more about them than it does him.”

Mr Galloway said Mr Bashir’s application form was in the party’s hands and at least five witnesses, who were part of the interview panel, were “prepared to confirm” that Mr Bashir had joined the party and then been sacked as a council candidate for the Bradford Moor ward.

Mr Galloway however, would not reveal why the party had decided to drop Mr Bashir.

Speaking via the Tory press office, the Mirror reported that Mr Bashir denied ever having any association with Respect.

The Yorkshire Standard has attempted to get in contact with Mr Bashir via phone and email but hasn’t been able to get through.

The article will be updated as soon as we receive a response.
