Family, friends and guests braved harsh weather conditions yesterday to attend a tribute event for a teen who died in a car crash in Bradford.

People paid their respects to 15-year-old Saliq Malik, who was a passenger in a Volkswagen Golf which crashed in Barkerend on 12 September.

He suffered serious head injuries and died in hospital later on the same day.

An event was organised in City Park by Saliq’s father and friends who wanted to raise awareness about road safety and the consequences of reckless driving.

Saliq’s father, Amjad Malik, said: “The soul is given to a mother and a father, and it’s there job to bring the soul up, which we did.

“We tried our best to give Saliq everything and he accepted everything from whatever we gave him. The hard times, the good times, the happiness and the sadness, he was always with us.

“I miss him. I am father to a child who is not here anymore. Please, please, please everyone, think speed.”

Speeches were also made by guests including Imam Muhammad Asim Hussain, Arfan Naseer of the Con-Sequence enterprise, deputy leader of Bradford Council Cllr Imran Hussain, and MP for Bradford East David Ward.

After speeches were made, Amjad and relatives released balloons into the air and a pair of white doves.
