Two men have been jailed for helping a man flee the UK during his trial for raping a woman in West Yorkshire.

Mohammed Raja, of Hudson Crescent, and Raja Sarwar, of Tern Street, both from Bradford, have been jailed for a total of four years at Bradford Crown Court for perverting the course of justice.

They were guilty of helping 21-year-old Wakar Akhtar escape to Italy in November.

Akhtar, of Hudson Avenue, Bradford, was found guilty of raping a woman in Great Horton Park, along with co-defendants Tamseel Virk, 43, Azad Raja, 39, and Najim Ul-Saeed, who were all given jail terms of 17 years for their part in the conspiracy.

The incident took place in May last year, when a teacher passed out after drinking at a birthday celebration before she came round to find one of her abusers having sex with her.

She was dropped off near their home and raped on a bench while she was unconscious.

West Yorkshire Police said Akhtar could begin a 17-year sentence for rape following an extradition hearing.

Akhtar was arrested in northern Italy on 29 November and is due to have the extradition hearing at the High Court in Brescia tomorrow.
