Yorkshire’s comedy greats featured on April Fool’s Day stamps
Two home-grown comedy greats have been featured on stamps marking their contribution to the world of entertainment.
Royal Mail have today launched a set of stamps to mark contributions to the world of entertainment and comedy by some of the nation’s most cherished performers since the 1950s.
Sheffield-born Michael Palin features alongside the rest of Monty Python team, whose stamp features ‘The Ministry of Silly Walks’ in the background.
Leeds-born Ernie Wise, half of the Morecambe and Wise double act, also features on a first class stamp.
They join 10 others featured, which include Norman Wisdom; Spike Milligan; Peter Cook and Dudley Moore; The Two Ronnies; French and Saunders; Victoria Wood; Lenny Henry and Billy Connolly.
Andrew Hammond, Head of Stamps and Collectibles at Royal Mail, said: “For decades, the UK has long boasted some of the most influential and significant comedy talent in the world. This set of stamps rightly pays tribute to the comedians who have made the nation laugh out loud at their ground-breaking comedy genius.”
Royal Mail will be issuing a special postmark across the country to mark the stamp set.
Vans operating in locations with strong links to those on the stamps will also be featuring an image of the relevant stamp.
