Wonder season for the Whetley Warriors

Whetley Academy has had a fantastic season which has seen them all the way through to the Bradford & District Cup final.

The Primary school based in Girlington came top of a tough group of eight back in November which saw them qualify for the Bradford West Finals.

Further success followed in the Bradford West Final’s as Whetley finished joint top with Clayton Village to qualify for the final.

Here, the top two teams from the North, South, East, West and Central Bradford came together to battle it out for the crown of Bradford’s finest.

The Goal’s Soccer Centre at Hanson School played host to the final’s where Whetley defeated St. Stephens, St. Matthews, Wibsey and Baildon in the group stage before beating Faversham on penalties in the semi-final.

The tournament saw Wheltey only concede four goals all tournament thanks to solid defending by Subhan Mir and his thrifty defenders, coupled with Sohail Ali’s goalscoring exploits in attack.

Whetley’s winning streak came to an end in the final though as Baildon held them to a 0-0 draw, before beating Whetley on sudden death penalties.

Manager Ryan Conroy was proud of his team’s achievements, and said: “The boys were excellent throughout and were lucky in the end. Despite the defeat in the final in my eye’s the boys are all true champions!”
