Sword swallower who pierced throat in West Yorkshire to return

Hannibal Hellmurto

One of Europe’s most famous sword swallowers, Hannibal Hellmurto, is set to return to the county with the famous Circus of Horrors with a series of death-defying stunts.

The former tax inspector will be performing in Halifax next month, which happens to be a few miles from Bradford, the place he went through a life-threatening ordeal that nearly cost him his life.

In 2009, he swallowed a lit neon tube live on stage at the St George’s Hall.

It got stuck, piercing his oesophagus with a 4cm gash, so he had to spend four weeks in Bradford Royal Infirmary’s intensive care unit and a further two weeks in a general ward.

Back in 2007, he also pierced his throat passage with a sword and spent four weeks in hospital.

Hellmurto will now be performing with the popular Circus of Horrors, a show that stormed into the finals of Britain’s Got Talent in 2011.

The performance has already been touring across the UK, and Hellmurto chose Glasgow to attempt his latest and greatest sword-swallowing stunt.

On 20 February, he was hoisted upside down and he swallowed nine swords in less than one minute.

He’s no newcomer to world records as he created a world record at the Edinburgh Festival when he pulled a four tonne truck 100 meters along Princes Street with two meat hooks through his back.

Hellmurto will be performing with the Circus of Horrors at the Victoria Theatre on 22 March.
