X Factor winner of 2009, Joe McElderry, will be performing in the town of Halifax for the first-time in history as part of his Set Your Soul Alive nationwide tour.

Joe – who stormed to victory in front of millions on the famous talent show – will be performing a selection of songs along with his four-piece backing band, made up from some of the best musicians in the business.

Exclusively talking to the Yorkshire Standard ahead of his performance, Joe said: “This show is a really fun show. It’s different from last year’s show and it’s got a lot of new material in and some songs that people have never heard before with the new album in mind.

“It shows where I am in my career at the moment. It’s a fun show, so whether you want to go out and have a dance in the aisles and listen to music, or whether you want to listen to a classical ballad song, there’s something there for everyone.”

At the age of 18, Joe auditioned for the X Factor and bowled the judges over with his rendition of Luther Vandross’ Dance with My Father, even impressing Whitney Houston in the series when she appeared as a guest mentor.

After winning the show, his single The Climb rocketed to number one and his album, Classic, went gold within two weeks.

The first X Factor winner to release four albums, Joe appeared in Popstar To Operastar, securing a victory after amassing 80% of the votes.

Joe is now performing nationwide as part of his tour, and so far, fans have shown a lot of positive support.

He said: “The nice thing about this tour is that I’ve never been to some of the places before, Halifax being one of them. So I’m meeting lots of new fans and seeing places and people I’ve never met before.

“I love being able to go on the tour and meet them all and the reason I’m able to do that is because of them, so I’m forever thankful.”

Joe has a tiring schedule as a touring artist, but he’s making sure he’s in shape for each of his performances.

He laughed: “I’m very lucky I’ve got a tour van that has a beautiful bed in that’s very comfortable, so I’m fortunate on the sleep level.

“It’s a really tiring schedule, but I try to keep fit, run and exercise and keep my body prepared for it. But I enjoy being busy. I get bored if I’m not.”

Joe is working on a new album, which he’s keeping under wraps for now.

He’ll be performing at the Victoria Theatre in Halifax on 21 March.
